It all starts when society diva Loy slaps newsman Tracy with a libel suit. Tracy enlists fiancée Harlow and down-on-his luck Powell in a counter maneuver involving a rigged marriage, a phony seduction, a fabulously funny fishing scene, fisticuffs, broken promises and hearts and eventually, true love for all.--Container

VERY GOOD 1936 b/w film with four excellent period film stars.
Just recently saw the 1946 film whack comic 'Easy to Wed' (highly recommended) and when I learned that it was a remake of this one, I had to check it out, too.
I was particularly impressed by the 'Libeled Lady' rapid dialogue - excellent writing (and delivery by the actors) - it really flies by.
Apparently many viewers really enjoy the fishing scene comedy (which left me a little flat). Interesting/curious that for some reason they changed the sporting interest from fishing to duck hunting in 'Easy to Wed'.
I do agree that ending is a little weak - but overall I enjoyed the four stars sharing the screen in a fun comedy.

This is a great comedy classic. Not quite up to par with Powell and Loy's first Thin Man, but pretty slick non-the-less. Definitely worth a watch. (Even if I don't understand why Harlow was deemed such a vixen...)

Nominated for Best Picture at the 1937 Academy Awards, Libeled Lady is a hilarious product of the stunning performances particularly from Jean Harlow and William Powell. They seem to be the most relaxed actors of those golden years of Hollywood. Harlow has that innate comedienne quality while Powell, always the subtle gentleman. Worth watching just for those delicious duo.
