Neil Marshall trades in the testosterone-drenched machismo of “Dog Soldiers” for a double dose of kick-ass estrogen in this shockingly effective horror thriller. When a group of female spelunkers get trapped in a series of subterranean caves they soon discover that they are being stalked by some very nasty creatures with little brains and great big teeth. But even as they desperately search for a way out the “crawlers” always seem to be just one step ahead. It’s all here...claustrophobic spaces, creepy monsters, and a pervasive darkness that weighs on our protagonists as much as the tons of earth and rock above their heads. Marshall’s underground world is a dimly lit succession of nightmare landscapes and bottomless chasms where any shadow could hide a pile of whitewashed bones or a pair of malevolently glowing eyes. As friend turns against friend and reality becomes questionable a psychological dimension emerges that culminates in a bleakly enigmatic final scene. A true “chick flick” in every good sense, from the cast of strong yet believable women to the prevalence of psychosexual imagery (despite Marshall’s statement to the contrary sometimes a cave is not just a cave). If you’re looking for a film with shocks, gore, AND brains you need look no further.

Despite an excess in unimpressive CGI effects during this era, the creepies in this flick actually come off fairly freaky; even if this film follows the well trodden format familiar to slasher-flick fans, i.e. a gaggle of gushing gorgeous gals getting picked off one by one. (except "survivor-girl", of course)... or?... The atmosphere works though -we're not talking quantum physics here, and subterranean mutant human exile vampires works just fine. Watch in the dark!

Very frightening , well acted, and at times claustrophobic, THE DESCENT is a terrific movie and a rarity in the cinematic cannon, in that it's a horror film that as opposed to reliance on graphic gore, goes the way of quality acting, and excellent cinematography, via the shots of the mountainsides and forest areas, and even the cavernous dwelling itself. The creatures are CGI, but it doesnt deter from a well told story, and the focus is on how the lead actresses fare in their relationships with one another, and this results in a watchable, effective film. Keep attentive for the shocking conclusion.

This is a really unique and different movie. Not your typical monster movie nor setting at all. There are some really scary parts as well as some very suspenseful moments. It's one of the best I have seen in a long time. I have actually seen this three or four different times since so many wanted to see it after I watched it. I don't scare easily so the scary parts aren't really bad for me but for others might be somewhat terrifying at times.

I remember the first time i heard about this movie was from a review i read in the newspaper. The review was very good for a horror movie. So i waited until it was available on D.V.D. and bought it for my collection. I must admit, i do have plenty of horror movies in my collection. And this one is done very well to give you HOMETHEATER frights and sounds that are perfect for a monster movie. The monsters, characters, story and sound are all top notch. From the opening sounds of the rushing river, which is nice. To the scary sounds of the creatures underground. This movie does have "Sound Freak" approval throughout this horror classic. One of my favorite scenes for sound is when the ladies are underground and hear the creatues above them. Your treated to 360 degrees of sound as the monsters circle them in the dark. It's done very well. And the first time they see the creatures up close is classic!! The second time i watched this movie i saw it with my friend. And this same scene had my friend grab my arm and wouldn't let go. It's not often my friend gets scared, but this movie had her going. Once my friend found out the dirty secret, she was pissed! Constantly talking back to the screen hoping this one character would die!! I love horror and this movie proves they still make good scary movies. I'm giving this monster movie 5 stars!!!!!! Great looking monsters, good sound effects, attractive and athletics characters, and the dirty secret. Slices of ham, turkey, roast beef, and chicken with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayo. Pepperidge Farm "Tahiti" cookies and a large Arizona ice tea.
