Six Frigates

The Epic History of the Founding of the U.S. Navy

Before the ink was dry on the U.S. Constitution, the establishment of a permanent military became the most divisive issue facing the new government. The founders--particularly Jefferson, Madison, and Adams--debated fiercely. Would a standing army be the thin end of dictatorship? Would a navy protect from pirates or drain the treasury and provoke hostility? Britain alone had hundreds of powerful warships.

From the decision to build six heavy frigates, through the cliff-hanger campaign against Tripoli, to the war that shook the world in 1812, Ian W. Toll tells this grand tale with the political insight of Founding Brothers and the narrative flair of Patrick O'Brian.

A captivating account of an early chapter in American history - the first presidents of the country, the first "six frigates" (including the U.S.S. Constitution, of course), and plenty of seafaring action, set against the backdrop of revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, Congressional acts and misbehavior, duels, Barbary Pirates - a rich tapestry of living history.

This is a master work of historical writing. You will leave this book knowing more, and being grateful for it, then you were before. The intricacies of naval warfare and history of the U.S. Navy are put together in a way that is not only comprehensivable but thoroughly enjoyable. A must read.

Outstanding book on the establishment and early history of the navy and its first 6 ships. Extremely well researched and writen. If any shortcomes exist it might be the interpetation of nautical actions via use of sailing terminology or note the authors "draft" into discussion of non-related topics; dueling for example. 5 Star book
