I will only comment on the novel itself as I have only heard the excerpt from the audiobook. Martin Freeman does a fine job of reading the prologue. The book is a bit like a country and western song played backwards. Arthur Dent gets his planet back, gets his house back and gets his girl back (or at least another girl; Trilian plays no part in this novel). In the prologue Arthur’s new girlfriend gets a buildup as if she had a spiritual message more important than anything conceived of by Moses or Christ, but in the novel itself it seems she doesn’t even dimly remember her vision, and although a charming lady, has nothing of great value to pass on. It is a bit of a disappointment, but I suppose Douglas Adams was of the opinion that spiritual revelations usually are.
No one really reads one of these novels for the plot, but there are delightful bits all through it that poke fun at our pretentious society. One of the Amazon reviewers thought it was the best of all the Hitchhiker books. I am not sure I would go that far. I found the device of Arthur Dent flying under his own power irritating in the third book, and it is still more so in this one, where he teaches his girlfriend Fenchurch to fly. Nevertheless, it is well worth reading.
