VERY GOOD 1998 sci-fi film.
The plot was a bit abstract (not sure exactly what was going on) - but it was fine filmography, etc. and quite a fun watch...

A futuristic noir film. It explores the themes of memories, individuality, and the soul. "Are we, in fact, more than the mere sum of our memories?"
The world in this film is dark, artificial, and claustrophobic, which is one of the successes of the film. The film is so captivating it feels real.
Dark City explored the human experience with similar questions posed by The Matrix, but Dark City did so with an effortless simplicity.

This is an amazingly underrated movie, which I'm okay with due to the selfish joy I get from getting to show this film to people who haven't seen it. Visually, its stunning and unique with a cyberpunk flare. Jennifer Connolly is a vision and look out for Richard O'Brien of Rocky Horror fame. Alex Proyas is criminally underused behind the camera, giving us The Crow and I, Robot. (Yes, I'm vehemently ignoring Gods of Egypt.)

A vastly underrated thriller. A man wakes up in a bathtub with fractured memories involving a murder. His quest for answers sets off a manhunt by police, who suspect him of murder. Worst, he finds he is being pursued by strange pale men in trench coats whom no one else seems to notice. The movie asks whether your personality is built from the summation of your memories, your surroundings, or something greater.

Somebody suggested this movie and I'm so glad. How did I know about it until now? What a cool film! Philosophical, artistic, weird, dark, intriguing, captivating. I learned so much from the bonus features too! Reminds me of other strange, dark fantasy/sci-fi, alter-world type movies like Brazil, The Matrix & The Double. Kinda complicated but well worth the watch.

I loved the Matrix, but Dark City, lost amidst the Matrix clones that spawned after the Wachowski's great success, blows the Matrix out of the water. Dark and mysterious, deliberately dream like and nightmarish, and far more creative than anything the Wachowski's dreamed until they adapted Cloud Atlas. Dark City is Noir at its most bizarre and boundary pushing. Dark City is Science Fiction at it's most incisive and unnerving. Dark City is Thriller and Action at its most unapologetic. This is worth digging up. This is worth your time.

Very, very creative and original sci-fi film that I enjoyed tremendously. As one commenter pointed out, Kiefer Sutherland (whom the commenter apparently REALLY despises) tended to lay his Peter Lorre schtick on a bit too thick, but as a whole, I found the movie very absorbing, floating bald goons and all.

I wouldn't recommend it (overly long and dreary),
but I think it probably inspired some other filmmakers?

[first lines]
Dr. Schreber: [voiceover] First there was darkness. Then came the strangers. They were a race as old as time itself. They had mastered the ultimate technology. The ability to alter physical reality by will alone. They called this ability "Tuning". But they were dying. Their civilization was in decline, and so they abandoned their world seeking a cure for their own mortality. Their endless journey brought them to a small, blue world in the farthest corner of the galaxy. Our world. Here they thought they had finally found what they had been searching for.
