But now she loved winter. Winter was beautiful "up back" - almost intolerably beautiful. Days of clear brilliance. Evenings that were like cups of glamour - the purest vintage of winter's wine. Nights with their fire of stars. Cold, exquisite winter sunrises. Lovely ferns of ice all over the windows of the Blue Castle. Moonlight on birches in a silver thaw. Ragged shadows on windy evenings - torn, twisted, fantastic shadows. Great silences, austere and searching. Jewelled, barbaric hills. The sun suddenly breaking through grey clouds over long, white Mistawis. Ice-grey twilights, broken by snow-squalls, when their cosy living-room, with its goblins of firelight and inscrutable cats, seemed cosier than ever. Every hour brought a new revalation and wonder.

Add a CommentI have always loved this book. A gentle feel-good read without being too sappy. And written by a Canadian in a Canadian setting to boot. A little bit Farley Mowat, a little bit Anne of Green Gables :)
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is so delightful and so satisfying. I have read it many times and I fall in love with it every time. Valancy is such an underdog at the beginning of the book. Her life has been completely empty and bleak. Then, she finds out she is dying. She suddenly decides that it is time to start living and off she goes to seek some happiness. Montgomery wrote this book for adults, not children. It is a romance, but it is also about taking control of your own life and making choices. It is also very funny and charming yet it is also very poignant. This book is not as famous as "Anne of Green Gables" but I think this book is Montgomery's masterpiece.
I promise that you won't regret reading this book! The details are incredible and the story it self is pretty funny. I found my self laughing a few times in my quiet reading area. AWESOME READ!
This was good. It was much more satisfying than I thought it was going to be. Every time Valancy defied other people and pleased herself, it made me feel good. It was almost as if I had been the one pleasing only myself. This book was extremely inspiring and very, very good. Valancy and Barney are such dears!
This is an amazing book! I really liked it! If you like the "Anna of Green Gables" book you will for sure like this book.
If you loved Anne of Green Gables, The Blue Castle will be an absolute delight. Meet Valancy, a character (similar to Persuasion’s Anne Elliot) who takes our first impressions and ends up surprising us at every turn. I found myself cheering her on at every act of rebellion! A lovely story for a sick day, or any other day.
Delightful in EVERY way! Loved it! I can't wait to read it again!

L. M. Montgomery's writing is so beautiful in this book that it made me want to go to Muskoka. The main character, Valancy, is likeable and even surprising. The guy, Barney, is not so surprising, even a bit predictable, but still cool. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely read it again. It made me laugh a lot. For a 20s book, the heroine is pretty awesome.
I loved this book the first time I read I stayed up till 2:00am
