Captured early World War II battles & US limited combat capability compared to Japan very well
Going to an Earth with no humans evolved at all & slightly different geography in details different. They found sentient lemurs & expansionist reptiles instead.

At first, I didn't think I'd like it, but after reading the first book, I immediately had the read the rest of the series, and enjoyed each book even more than the previous one (at present, 10 books in this series have been published. Wherever the author draws his inspiration from, I hope he keeps this series alive.
