SummaryAdd a Summary
Mellody's book is aimed at people who are excessively, dependently involved with either a dysfunctional person--or a dysfunctional relationship. This is not a 12-Step type program, but shows how unresolved issues (often from childhood, but not necessarily) can make a person too "needy," or even addicted. The main focus is on the "love addict," but significant attention is also given to those the "addict" gets involved with, namely, "the love avoidant." The "avoidant" is the person the addict "needs," but is never satisfied with, and is emotionally inept in (usually) his own way, too. Note that the female is typically the love addict, and her consort is usually the avoidant--but the dynamic may well apply to relationships in birth families, the work place, and elsewhere. If there's somebody you "can't live with, and can't live without," and maybe you're in and out of the relationship(s) numerous times--this book may explain things for you! It did, for me.
