1970s, Flint, Michigan. Jackie Moon is a former pop sensation who somehow made enough money from a couple of hit records to buy Flint's semi-pro basketball team, the Tropics. The team consists of a bunch of disorganized losers with one genuine talent named Coffee Black. Despite knowing little about the game, Jackie is the Tropics' coach as well as a player. His greater love involves coming up with bizarre marketing stunts to draw in an audience. His stunts include wrestling a bear and attempting a motorcycle jump over a line of cheerleaders. When the league plans to merge with the NBA and in order to survive, the Tropics must do the seemingly impossible - win. The Tropics look like they might be shut down so Jackie desperately agrees to let washed-up veteran player Monix take over coaching

Had to watch this in two separate parts because it was a bit boring with the story, but one thing this movie can do is make you laugh and for that reason it was a good time.

A goofy, funny, and irreverently silly film!

Good if you need a laugh!

Will Ferrell is his usual funny self in this 1970s spoof comedy yarn!

very crude, some mildly funny parts, mostly crude words and weak story.

Basketball fans, in particular, will enjoy this light comedy. For me, the best part was Jackie Moon’s original song.

Awesome Will Farrell and Andre Benjamin combination. I lot of left side humor.

Just seeing Will Ferrell wrestle a bear, makes this movie worth seeing. Not the best movie out there but you'll have a laugh or two.

A lot of swearing, not very funny and generally disappointed with the film. The film is done in typical Will Ferrell humour, so if you generally like his films you may like this one.

Semi-Pro (2008) **½ 91 min. starring Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson. Personal bias – I’m not a big fan of Will Ferrell. I just don’t find the man very funny. But there are a couple of clever scenes in this movie that make it “watchable” – all promotional gimmicks to get fans to come out to the basketball games. The one in particular is the bear fight event that leads to a panic – I laughed out loud. Watch this one only for those promo scenes and the soundtrack – 1970’s music. Great stuff!

Dick Pepperfield: With the possible exception of eh, Henry Ford... Jackie Moon has done a lot for this city, you're right about that.
