“Les Amantes” (The Lovers), by Louis Malle was an award winning film released the year after his highly acclaimed “Elevator to the Gallows.” Both films star Jeanne Moreau who would soon become even more famous for her starring role in “Jules and Jim.” An American jurisdiction fines an American theatre $2500 for showing “The Lovers,” as it included a controversial love scene. The theatre took the case all the way to the Supreme Court, which came out with the verdict that the movie did not contain obscenity. This is the movie, where Supreme Court Justice Powell said something like “I know obscenity when I see it, and this was not obscenity.”
