Religious historian Armstrong discusses the conception, gestation, life, and afterlife of history's most powerful book. Armstrong analyzes the social and political situation in which oral history turned into written scripture, how this all-pervasive scripture was collected into one work, and how it became accepted as Christianity's sacred text. She explores how "as the pragmatic scientific ethos of modernity took hold, scripture was read for the information that it imparted" and how, in the nineteenth century, historical criticism of the Bible caused greater fear than Darwinism.--From publisher description

Chaos throughout the process of defining the Bible and beliefs surrounding it has been the dominant characteristic of its development. Dense, challenging read.

"Many of the Puritans were convinced that their migration to America was a prelude to THE LAST DAYS. " "On November 4, 1995, Yigal Amira assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin during a peace rally in Tel Aviv. His study of Jewish law convinced him that in signing away the sacred land, in the Oslo Accords, Rabin was a RODEF ('pusuer')who endangered Jewish life and was therefore worthy of punishment." " The creation of Israel in 1948 was seen by Jerry Falwell as 'The greatest single sign indicating the imminent return of Jesus Christ.' " Martin Buber (1878-1965): 'Jews, Christians, and Muslims must first examine the flaws of their own scriptures and only then listen with humility, generosity, and humility, and charity to the exegis of others.' I love the research done by Karen Armstrong and the insights she has in this book. I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in antiquities, the Bible, religion, and translation.
