The way we were. Sad and boring but mostly realistic.
This novel has done for me what many I've read lately have done, helped me to lose myself and experience to an extent the struggles of people in a totally different cultural setting. If I were watching a film of the same story, the color of the person's skin would always be there to remind me of the barriers. With the novel, I get inside the person's head and see things through their eyes. This is challenging, and while difficult at times, is overall a good thing for me. My hope is that what I learn from reading books like this will bear fruit in my daily life and help me to overcome those barriers.
