Young Törless is to go to boarding school. His experiences there, the merciless torments of the pupils among themselves and the unsatisfactory answers of his teachers make it clear to Törless that good and bad cannot be differentiated in life. The boy leaves the boarding school at his own request after a short while. The incipient social and personal deformation in Musil's novel is skillfully implemented by Schlöndorff in close correspondence with the text but also in a more distant manner

It’s hard to find fault with “Young Torless”. It’s a scrupulous examination (in handsome black and white) of the flawed German character from a classic book that pre-dates WW2, which reverberates ironically post WW2. Not quite as haunting as Haneke’s superb “The White Ribbon”, but executed far earlier. “Young Torless” also wears its influences fairly lightly ( especially Vigo’s “Zero Par Conduite”). Only caveats are its talkiness (no doubt cribbed from Musil’s novel itself), and the daintiness with which it approaches the gay and S & M aspects of the story. Aside from its own considerable merits, this film was a pioneering one; it was a touchstone for the “New German Cinema”. It’s worth seeing.
