Offbeat, overlooked early 70s western, written by Robert
Benton and David Newman, who also wrote "Bonnie & Clyde." Benton makes his directorial debut and Jeff Bridges stars. Like "B&C," this is about outlaws, but it's a more light-hearted (well, except for the hangings and gun fights) film that is part buddy comedy, part Twain-esque adventure. Barry Brown plays an innocent man fleeing conscription who falls in with Bridges and his rough and tumble gang of rapscallions. They meet up with a much tougher, more violent gang led by David Huddleston, who nearly three decades later would appear with Bridges in "The Big Lebowski" (he's the other Lebowski). Brown and Bridges have a nice rapport, there's a good mix of action and comedy (years before this was commonplace in movies like "Beverly Hills Cops" and the "Lethal Weapon" series), and it's beautifully shot by Gordon Willis, who also worked with Francis Ford Coppola and Woody Allen. Sadly, Brown killed himself in 1978.
