Haiti in PicturesBook - 2006
Haiti is a mountainous, tropical island that lies 50 miles southeast of Cuba, on the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Once among the richest of France's colonies, Haiti has fallen into economic decline and is currently one of the world's poorest and most densely populated nations. Haiti gained its independence from France in 1804, becoming the first independent black state in the New World. It is also home to the site where Christopher Columbus first landed in 1492.
