True goodness appears in unlikely places, and grey, post-war Britain is one of them (George Orwell's 1984 was inspired by 1948 for a reason.) In a world of desperate woman and the people who preyed on them, Vera Drake is a shining light. However one feels about abortion, she cannot be called selfish or callous. But too good to be true? Vera is not based on any particular person, though there are always a few women who provide abortion services free of charge. Unfortunately, we never find out with clarity who this woman is, or specifically why she does what she does. With all its working class realism, the film has a tinge of unreality.

Thoroughly impressed with this film - in particular the acting. It feels authentic - costumes, accents, sets, etc. The main character is almost saintly or angelic, despite her working class, ordinary, stocky appearance. Almost too good to be true - but the superb, subtle acting makes it seem true. Interesting that the director dedicated the film to his father (doctor) and mother (midwife).

Imelda Staunton's Vera Drake is very very believable.
She is fun in "Cranford".

Stunning performance from Imelda Staunton. Also worth noting that the film is largely unscripted, and the actors (other than Staunton) were unaware of the plot twists before they occurred!
