Such a heartfelt novel. Follow Emily Windsnap on a swishy! Adventure where she embraces her Merlife with the help of her newfound best friend Shona!

Emily windsnap is part human and part mermaid. Her mother is human, her father is a merman. Her mother had forgotten everything and all Emily knew was what her mother knew, that her father had just disappeared and left them one day.

However that was not the case. Join Emily on a fintastic adventure and learn the truth about what happened to her father.

Here's an example of a book from the backlist that I've recommended to kids for years while nonetheless remaining entirely convinced it was Not My Thing. And hey -- I was totally wrong! Perhaps it is because it's British (and therefore catnip to me), but I thought this was surprisingly delightful. Does it actually make that much sense? I would argue no, not at all. Kessler maybe should have workshopped her whole mermaid world a bit more. But does it actually matter? Again, no! This is very cute and I 100% comprehend the popularity of this series now, because I finished this entirely charmed.

A girl named Emily takes her first swimming lesson as a 7th grader and something weird is happening to her legs. How embarrassing! She fakes a cramp and takes a couple of days to regroup until it dawns on her that she can turn into a mermaid. But, no what?! Where is her father? Why doesn't her mother seem to like water at all -- yet she lives on a boat? Emily makes a new friend in a mermaid her own age and they start to look for answers.Middle grade students will read this book and learn about overcoming obstacles, blocking bullies and loving loyalty. Would make a fun read aloud.
