What a great idea to test literature's most rational man against the inexplicable horrors of Lovecraft's mad universe. Instead we are presented with a Sherlock Holmes who (surprise!) already knows all about the Cthulhu mythos and how to combat it. Despite some big name contributors, this anthology struck me as a missed opportunity.

First and foremost this gets four stars for Neil Gaiman's "A Study in Emerald". It gets the fifth star for combining Cthulhu with Sherlock Holmes... :)

It's "Elementary, my dear Watson" meets "In his house at Ry'leh dead Cthulu waits dreaming." A bunch of short-story writers have a fabulous time throwing classic detective Sherlock Holmes into the macabre world of early 19th century horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. What could be more fun than reading about Sherlock Holmes facing off against ancient aliens from the backwoods of New England?
