An interesting alternative Western! One of Altman's New Hollywood pieces.

A rather slow film with many - far too many - sharp cuts. The plot about a hustler/ pimp who ends up buying a stake in a mine, who slowly falls in love with a drug addicted hooker/ madam, and then who ends up running for his life after his negotiating tactics backfire with the wrong sort incorporated hustler. The roughness, crudity, vulgarity, and violence of the time and place is shown clearly.

Time Out (London) rated this as number 1 on their list of 50 Greatest Westerns.
While I wouldn't go that far, I do indeed rate this as an absolutely superb film.
The filming is beautiful. The Leonard Cohen songs add wonderful atmosphere. Julie Christie is superb as always.

An extremely atmospheric Western, to say the least. Innovative for its departure from the standard run-of-the-mill cowboy yarns prior. There is no John Wayne/Gary Cooper style hero here on his white horse saving Nell from Snidely Whiplash who tied her to the railroad tracks. Robert Altman introduces us to bare @$$ed prostitutes, an opium den, and an antihero who is a drunk and a coward. It's rumored that the log buildings of the town were crafted by a crew who went to Vancouver to dodge the Vietnam draft.
