I rather enjoyed this book: its written clearly, with verve (but never gets carried away), and it doesn't skew or over-emphasize certain times, places, or events excessively; its broad-minded and humane and doesn't glamorize a particular ethnic group, nor does it demonize - none of this means that the author doesn't exercise judgement, he does, and its reasonable. There is a bit of a hurriedness to the prose, especially in the last third of the book. Most importantly, it related the history such that one is interested enough to learn more of it.
