Opinion

From Library Staff

A treasure worth killing for. A shopworn private eye with his own code of ethics. A perfumed grafter, a fat man, and a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. These are the ingredients of this coolly glittering gem of detective fiction.

There's a reason why Dashiell Hammett is considered a master of the Noir field. The Continental Op is exactly what you expect - trench coat, flask of scotch, pistol, and coming in to clean up without worrying about the rules he breaks while doing so. I loved visiting Poisonville in Red Harvest. And reading about Sam Spade in the Maltese Falcon made me want to find all the old Humphrey Bogart classics and watch them at once.
