Spoiler alert: What actually lies beneath is a pretty dumb movie.

Oh, how disappointed I am in WHAT LIES BENEATH. There's a good movie buried in there. Unfortunately, it's buried deep. Instead of being a psychological drama or even simply a run-of-the-mill thriller, it falls victim to a lot of spooky hooey and choreographed jump scares. Editing and a few rewrites were necessary to fix this film. Parts of the story, such as the car accident leading to the protagonist's memory loss and the protagonist's former brilliance as a musician, could have been tied together in a way that held more significance. For example, as the protagonist's memory came back to her bit by bit, she could have been able to play again. I don't want to ruin anything for those who do want to see this film, but I suggest your time is best spent elsewhere. As much as I adore Michele Pfeiffer, WHAT LIES BENEATH was such a bust. Even the last few thrilling minutes of the film were plagued with ridiculous resolutions that injured the film even after it was damaged.

It's derivative of other films, yes, but it's also an atmospheric supernatural film about secrets. Ford and Pfeiffer are good together, and director Zemeckis takes his time telling the story, pushing the buttons when we need them pushed.

Don't bother with this one. I like Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, but this is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. As a horror movie, it is a failure -- not scary. Predictable, and idiotic.
