I feel at times that you cannot fully experience the impact of an album unless you were there in its time, and this is especially prominent and true in the album Please Please Me. The sounds of the early '60s are so different than what we have today, and it really shines through in Please Please Me. The overly optimistic love songs really make the album what it is, and includes many personal favourites of mine: "Anna (Go To Him,)" "Misery" and George's hit, "Do You Want To Know A Secret?" Please Please Me introduced the world to what The Beatles have to offer and became the humble beginnings that many reference today. What really stands out about the album is that, although there are 14 tracks, Please Please Me was recorded, edited and mixed in just 25 hours, showcasing just how raw yet brilliant The Beatles were at the time. I personally love the use of handclaps and harmonies that the band use so often, and this album really shows how they use the style to their advantage. If you have a liking for optimistic and high-energy early 60's songs, then its more than probable that you would enjoy Please Please Me. The album's historical status alone makes it incredible. 5/5 @ShowMeTheMonet! of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
It must be confessed that the more one hears these silly and childish songs the more irritating they become. Many sound rather like country songs slightly pop-ified. The only one which didn't annoy me was track 12 ('A taste of honey').
To get the true impact of that album you would need to think of the time 1962/63, pop music was in vogue but mostly ballads and American doowop or if you were different Motown but suddenly the Beatles came out with Please Please Me an upbeat raw in your face single. It just took off with the kids. Even my old man who was into jazz and Chet Atkins said - when he heard them - they're good. As soon as I heard that song I went into a local record store and asked if they had it. The guy hadn't heard of them and asked me to spell the groups name. I spelled it Beetles which obviously was wrong but within a very short time everybody knew who they were and I suppose the rest is history.
The "original" cover had the lads in 1000 pound suites, looking like they came for dinner?
This entire album was recorded in 10 hours! Beatles publishing company was Maclen. So McCartney did get his name in "front" in a small way.
