I started Hokkaido Highway Blues, with much enthusiasm & barely could finish the book. Outside of a tear-jerking encounter with a Japanese P.O.W. in Chapter 11, I found the author immature. I certainly couldn't refer to him as "delightful" or "witty," as the critics describe above. I was horrified when he scaled a castle wall thinking he could be as nimble as a ninja while security scrambled to get him down. It was a historical site... really? He made fun of many of the Japanese who picked him up, & came across as very manipulative. He stays at a love hotel (place known for sexual encounters only) & then complains that there is a mirror on the ceiling. Really?...Not my cup of tea.
