SummaryAdd a Summary
Menolly's musician mentor dies and her family expects her to abandon her musical dreams and be a normal seaholding girl. Menolly runs away, and survives against all odds. Meanwhile her music is so good that Harper Hall is looking for her and can't find her because they think she's a boy.
After the death of her music teacher Melony hides her talent because it is not accepted by her family. She eventually runs away to live on her own in a cave where she discovers and "impresses" a clutch of baby fire lizards.
" Forbidden to play music because she is a girl, Menolly who runs away from her hold when deprived of her music, gets caught in a couple of thread falls, lives in a cave with a family of the much sought fire lizards, and is at last taken in to a Weyr community where the people adopt command of the creatures and--being less sexist than the traditional Holdmaster father--encouraged musical ability."
