Add a CommentThis book was slow at the beginning, but now I am so glad I persevered. High recommendation!!!
I was looking for this book for SO MANY YEARS! I first read it when I was in 4th grade. And I remember loving it so much. It was one of my all time favorite books back then. I just remembered it being called something like "the beaver's tale". It wasn't until I was talking to a customer at work about the book that she corrected me saying, "You mean, The Sign of the Beaver"? I was able to find an audio version and listen to it all over again as an adult now. Still love this story.
Love this!!!!!
Very great story! My teacher asked me to read it in school, and so I did. Very good tool for young children to learn about the relationship of American Indians with Whites.
Enjoyed the part with the bees.
okay
I remember reading this book in grade school (early 1990s). I have fond memories of the book even though we had quizzes and tests on it! I really remember the two boys becoming friends and that's what's stuck with me all these years. I wouldn't mind reading it again as an adult and see what I remember and what my adult brain has to say about the book now :)
A very good read. I enjoyed reading of how Matt grew up in various decisions and relationships, especially making a judgement on a people group you may not know. Highly recommend. I look forward to reading to my son when he get a little older, probably around 11 years old.
In this survival story set in the Maine wilderness, Matt is left to safeguard his family's cabin while his father goes back to Quincy, Massachusetts for the rest of the family. He is rescued from a dangerous encounter with a swarm of bees by an "Indian" boy and his grandfather. Matt is asked to teach Attean how to read. He relies on his copy of Robinson Crusoe to interest the extremely reluctant Attean. Eventually, Attean is teaching Matt woodland skills which will keep him alive.
Good book, Must read. You learn a lot from it
