Tony Hillerman is a master. Reading the books in order does provide important background character development in my opinion, although the books are capable of being read out of order without too much confusion. Tony Hillerman is an amazing story teller and his books are known for being accurate depictions of Navajo culture. This is shown in the mindset of the characters as well as the language of the books themselves. If you enjoy learning about cultures and also enjoy mystery stories - I recommend this series!
I really loved A Thief of Time, in particular. There are not many stories that meld my loves of learning about different cultures and masterfully told stories as well as fascinating scientific concepts. I loved learning about the physical and cultural anthropology relating to the lost Anasazi culture.
