The first solo album from Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, released in 1982. I confess that Steely Dan is a band that I can respect, but have never really been able to get into. I like that they were at odds with many of the prevailing trends of the 70s, favoring sharp irony, jazz chops, immaculate production, and a disdain for rock cliches and bombast. Yet they got a little too close to jazz-inflected soft rock for me, something it true of the loosely themed "The Nightfly" as well. Since it will probably will Steely Dan fans checking this out, it's probably best not to get overly critical. "Ruby Baby" is a Leiber/Stoller song.
