I read this book because it was recommended to me. I so enjoyed it! It was charming and fun! A great summer adventure story. Bonus it was published in 1957!

Charming, quiet book. Read this if you have had too much stimulation and bad news about the state of the world.

A classic! We don't have summer adventures like this any more: two children take the train on their own to upstate New York, where wide-ranging explorations in the woods lead them (and their cousins) to a dry lake, where they meet an elderly brother and sister pair and explore the tumbledown houses. Fantastic as a readaloud; the audiobook is great as well.

My Mother-Daughter Book Club read this for our July 2013 meeting. Mothers and daughters enjoyed the lovely, descriptive language and the tale of a secret place where cousins befriend 2 elderly naturalists. I read and loved this book as a child in the 60's and it is still a great read.
