The Patriarch of the title is Marco Desaix, WWII flying ace who fought alongside the Russians on the eastern front. His heroic stature in both countries made him a valuable diplomatic back-channel between French and Kremlin leaders. He…

A Bruno, Chief of Police novel. Quite predictable. More of a travelogue and a cooking show. One of the better novels in this series and still only average.

This is my second “Bruno” novel and what have I been missing. Firstly, in addition to the protagonists, chief among which there is Bruno, the village cop himself: laid back, sharp as a tack, knows everyone in town and loves his croissants.…

I enjoy this charming series and this book was no different. I like the casual pace of the stories, the solving of a murder in this case while Chief of Police, Bruno, lives out his daily life with his friendships, food, coffee, wine, and…

Yet another good read from Martin Walker. Attractively improbable, but full of winning characters, in a fine place. Bruno's feet of clay, indeed unfortunate. He needs a centre. Screams, just crying out for a Master Piece Theatre type…

I love this series and as we just came back from a few weeks in France, it was even more enjoyable. I enjoy the description of the lifestyle enjoyed by Bruno as much as anything. Interesting background too.

I like Bruno and admire Martin Walker as a writer, but this one was hard to plow through sometimes. There was much more about France's relationship with the Soviet Union and also military aircraft during the Cold War than I ever wanted to…

I'm enjoying these" Bruno, Cheif of Police" books. Some might they are a little light-weight, but its refreshing after reading all those gruesome Scandinavians and French mystery writers. Sort of a travelogue, with food, wine and …

It could be a good book but the characters become plastic and oh so predictable. Seriously tedious after a while. It is too bad that Mr Walker doesn't give his protagonist some depth........he could learn from Fred Vargas about French…

I've really enjoyed the Bruno series, and looked forward to this latest novel. Surprise! Disappointment. The book is padded with repetitive background details, and short on plot and suspense. It felt like the first draft of a…

Walker turns his eye in the latest in the BRUNO, CHIEF OF POLICE series to the complex national politics scene -- while retaining the food, friendship, and love of the Périgord his books are known for. Another excellent entry in the series.
