This sequel is a bit of a dud. I thought the premise was interesting, and the action was captivating immediately... but then it petered out very quickly. None of the characters were overly interesting, and the ones who piqued interest were left behind and/or forgotten.
Malorie had somehow developed into an overly-neurotic and obsessive mom constantly "breathing in. She holds it. She breathes out" (this is repeated 22 times. Twenty-two. Times). Her inner dialogue runs the majority of the plot, but for me her character was ruined. There were a lot of plot holes, giving the impression that attention to detail was missed. I have so many questions regarding the "twists" and discoveries that Malerman writes about.
It could have been shorter, it could have been more descriptive, and it could have given more answers. The conclusion --which was a grand, action-packed finale in Bird Box-- utterly lacked in Malorie due its tidiness, made especially glaring in a post-apocalyptic world run by monsters. Bird Box is one of my favourite horror novels, but I don't think I can recommend this one unfortunately. And that's the tea. This sequel is a bit of a dud. Absolutely stunning. This graphic novel emits so much feeling through its beautiful illustrations, focus on music as an art form, and portrait of the self. It highlights a variety of topics through limited text, and leaves the reader contentedly introspective upon completion. This bildungsroman encourages acceptance of both oneself and others, through uniquely cultivating the paving of your own path. Operatic is atmospheric and heart-wrenching in its call to find ourselves, whoever we may be. I highly recommend this Hamilton Reads teen pick to readers of all ages, graphic novel and/or music enthusiast, or not. And that's the tea.Absolutely stunning. I was really impressed with this novel. The story was contained within a weekend timeline, but also included intermittent flashbacks supplying tidbits of insight into the tumultuous "friendship" between Ruth and Stef. The author writes captivating prose that is dark, heartbreaking and beautiful in nature. Westhead touches on the hardships of humanity, and the mundane encapsulating adulthood. Although some questions may not have been answered, I was content with the conclusion Westhead curated and will be ruminating over the novel for days to come. From one worrier to another: that's the tea.I was really impressed with this novel.
